*The gradewide spelling bee is Friday, January 18th.  Mrs. Schlimm will be calling students to the library to spell their words.  Study your packets!

We will have a student teacher in our writing class for the next eight weeks.  Her name is Hayley Downs, and she is from NKU.  We are so excited she is with us, and I am sure the children will enjoy having her in our classroom!

Students will write their Monday journal entry on the topic of their choice and share them, while also identifying subjects and predicates in our sentences.  We will have our spelling pretest on Monday, practice due Wednesday, and final test Friday.  We will complete our DGPs (Daily Grammar Practice sheets) which applies grammar mechanics skills.  We will also work in table groups on our DEUILI (bell ringer warmups) and our Latin roots CONTRA/COUNTER.  Finally, we will finish our next on-demand about drones.  Busy week!  We are in the groove!  :)

Social Studies

In social studies this week we are continuing our native American unit. We will also use class time to work on our class beach which is on February 4.

This week we will begin working on adding and subtracting decimals. There will be a long division practice homework that is due Friday 1/18.

On Monday and Wednesday students in my core 1 and 2 classes will be using the Read Assist program to work on reading fluency and comprehension. Students in cores 3, 4 and 5 will spend this time working on their group project to learn more about one of the countries that is a setting for our class novel. On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday students will continue reading our class novel, Letters From Rifka.  While reading students will be looking for evidence of different character traits, and comparing the settings throughout the story.

Reading homework policy: Students will be given a homework assignment every Monday, and it is due on Friday. If a student finishes early he or she may turn it in at any time. Late assignments will be accepted, however students will lose a point each week the assignment is late. The title of this week’s homework assignment is “A Star Bangled Story.”

Help our classroom earn FREE books! When you place a Scholastic Book order, our class gets points to be used towards free books! Students will be given a brochure with books, or you can browse books atscholatic.com/bookclubs. If you do not already have an account you can create one for free. Connect your account with our class by entering the class code TJQDZ.
